Strategies to Promote Student Discourse, Collaboration, Engagement: Do your students nod, “Yes.” to affirm that they understand what you are saying, but you know that they really don’t? This workshop is about developing a classroom culture of productive discourse, collaboration and engagement via the use of simple, easy to enact structures that can be taught in September and used throughout the entire school year. In Many Ways: Math Tools, Models, & Strategies to Build Flexible Thinking: Ever had a student(s) that just did not get it the way it was being taught? This session provides math tools, models and strategies that can be used vertically, across grade levels, to build conceptual understanding, while teaching many ways to visualize and work out computational problems. Participants receive a toolkit of resources that can be used immediately with students. Participants work collaboratively making quick, 1-minute videos, using mathematically precise language, to document some of the ways to use various tools, models and strategies learned during the session. No faces appear in videos; only hands doing the work and voices explaining thinking. Videos will be made available immediately for all participants to access and share with fellow teachers, students and/or families. This session provides a welcoming learning environment where learners at all levels can deepen their understandings, while making a contribution to the larger community of mathematics. Nix the Tricks! Tools, Models and Strategies for Conceptual Understanding that Endures: This workshop helps teachers define and outline grade-level appropriate tools, math models and strategies that can be used to model thinking around computational problems to help students prove their thinking and understanding in many ways. We will focus on how to move beyond memorized steps and acronyms, such as KCF, to conceptual understanding that endures. Click here for workshop resources.
Structures & Routines for Developing Metacognitive Thinking to Solve Word Problems: To truly help students to become proficient problem solvers we must move beyond identifying “key words” and scaffolds such as checklists and acronyms. Learn how to use reading comprehension and visualization strategies as pedagogical tools to help students become better at understanding and solving word problems. This workshop models via active engagement how we can use these strategies within research-based structures and routines that promote engagement, collaboration and discourse to build and deepen our students metacognitive awareness and skills around solving word problems.
