Making Math Story Visuals

This was a free online session given on January 16th at 2:30 PM EST. Here are some of the resources created by participants. To get more information about what Math Story Visuals are and how to create and implement them please go to www.ckinged.com/mathstoryvisuals. You can see a recorded introducing Math Story Visuals below along with a “How-to” video…just scroll down.

Word Problems created by some of participants based on the Math Story Visuals:

Four friends went to a donut shop. They were only going to buy 1 donut each because the donuts cost 2 dollars each, but they were having a special sale to buy 6 and get 6 free, so they bought a dozen donuts to share and pay for equally. How much did each friend have to pay?

Four children went on a field trip to a bakery and a restaurant with $7.00 each. Each donut purchased was .10 by each student. They had lunch at the restaurant next door. The children choose their lunch from the selected menu spending $1.00. How much does each child have left after buying a donut and eating at the restaurant?

Gerry is having a birthday and wants to share treats with his class. Gerry's class has 12 students, including Gerry. Gerry can get cookies in sets of 12. If Gerry wants each student to give two cookies to each student, how many will he need to bring to class?

Martha had $100.00 for the week to spend. She went to the movies with her friend and spent $30.00 on her ticket and snacks. She bought cool glasses for $42.37. She bought groceries for the week and spent $ 28.65. Does she have enough money?

Della bought enough supplies to tie dye 3 t-shirts. She starts her project at 3:30pm. If it takes her 30 minutes to tie dye 1 shirt. When will she be finished tie dying all 3 t-shirts?

The Martinez family spent $2,145 at Target this week. If they did not shop on Saturday and Sunday and spent an equal amount the other days, how much did they spend on Monday?

Amari and her family shop at the grocery store. They usually go the store on Monday's because there is a flash sale. Amari wants to buy bananas for her class party. The bananas cost .39 cents a pound. She buys 3 pounds about how much money does she spend?

Mia and Bob went to the store. They bought a donut for 45 cents and a hot dog for 50 cents. How much money did they spend?

It was great meeting all of the enthusiastic educators in Greensboro, NC. I have added some of the items discussed in some session. Please feel free to review and use these items.

The Power of Pattern with equations

Session Summary: Would you like your students to be able to solve for x in an equation like 1/2x + 5 = 9 using mental reasoning and not a procedure? This workshop focuses on using our natural powers of patterns with problem strings to support students in thinking more critically about how to solve equations without jumping to meaningless rote procedures.

Examples:

Expressions and Equations

Scientific Notation

10% of Anything

Expressions and Equations Order of Operations

Maybe You Don't Need to Teach the Procedure

Session Summary: This workshop is about the why. Why does that procedure work? Why weren't other ways taught to me? In this workshop we will address some of the enduring procedures that we teach and may not know others ways to address, such as cross multiplication for proportional equations and keep, change flip. This session provides alternatives to some procedures that we have been taught and continue to teach.

Using Pedagogical Structures to Get Students Talking and Thinking

Session Summary: Learn about and experience research-based pedagogical structures that foster students' critical thinking, evaluation, analysis, listening skills, ownership of learning, collaboration, discourse, and engagement. Participants are introduced to 5 structures that can be used all year-long. The structures embody the Mathematical Practices and encourage students to evaluate and question information.
