WHAT AM I EXPECTED TO DO?

Select 2 of the following options. Be prepared to share your learning and insights with the group. You will have about 20 minutes to complete each option. You can work independently or collaboratively as the option allows. You will be asked to complete a reflection form here.

Option A: Fluency Routines

  1. Explore 1 to 2 of the following fluency routines that build number sense.

    • Subitizing with Dots 1 - 10: This collection shows dots that are in various configurations. Slide #2 shows a year-long progress based on the models from Number Talks by Sherri Parrish, pg. 71 - 81

    • Image Chats with Math Images in Your World: This collection shows images of real-world objects that can be discussed mathematically.

    • Splat - Watch the video on the page. Download the slide decks.

    • Just the Facts from Howard County School District. Watch the video. Download the slide decks.

  2. Discuss which ones you would use in your classroom and how you would use them.

  3. Select 1 routine and plan out how you will implement within the next few days.

Explore Various Manipulatives

  1. Use the links below to explore different ways to use the following tools.

  2. Think about and discuss how you will be using any of these tools in your upcoming topic.

Option B: Problem Solving

  1. Read handout: Problem of the Day vs. Problem of the Week

  2. Discuss the differences between PODs and POWs.

  3. Design a POD String or a POW in Google Docs.

  4. Share the document with christine@ckinged.com.


Option D: Math Environment

  1. Discuss what should be in the math environment in grades K - 2 and 3 -5? The math environment is what seen and what students have access to.

  2. Review the following checklist for ideas.

  3. Determine what should be in the P.S. 87X Math Environment. Collaboratively make the list and post here.
